Adjustable Dumbbells Under $300 in Australia
Between $150 and $300 you stop buying handles and start buying a mechanism. Whether that is worth it depends on how often you change weight mid-session.
Our under $150 guide covers the entry bracket. Between $150 and $300 something changes: you stop buying a pair of spinlock handles and start buying a mechanism. Whether that mechanism is worth the extra money depends almost entirely on how often you change weight mid-session.

The only question that matters at this price
How many times per session will you change the weight?
If the answer is two or three — a strength programme with long rests — spinlock collars are fine and the PROIRON at $139.99 is the better buy. You lose ninety seconds total.
If the answer is a dozen — circuits, supersets, drop sets — spinlock becomes the reason you stop training. That is what the FEIERDUN's selector is worth paying for, and it is the entire case for spending the extra $50.
Most people overestimate how much they will superset and underestimate how much they hate unscrewing collars.
What actually matters
Lightest available weight. Every adjustable dumbbell has a floor set by the handle and mechanism. For lateral raises and rehab work that floor is often too high. The 4-in-1 set exists precisely because of this, and it is the specification beginners most often fail to check.
Length at full load. Spinlock handles get long as you add plates, which makes them awkward for chest presses near the body.
Floor protection. Cast iron on floorboards leaves marks. Vinyl or neoprene coating is worth having if you train upstairs.
Handle knurling. Smooth chrome handles get slippery with sweat. This is a recurring complaint across cheaper spinlock sets.
Individual assessment
FEIERDUN 5-in-1 Adjustable Dumbbells — $189.99, 4.4 from 5,191 ratings. The best fit for circuit-style training in this bracket. Changes take seconds. Its lightest setting is heavier than a genuine beginner wants, so check that number against the exercises you actually do.
PROIRON 20kg Cast Iron Adjustable Dumbbell — $139.99, 4.6 from 14,449 ratings. The largest sample in this comparison and the best cost per kilo. Spinlock collars are slow. If you train with long rests you will not care.
Amazon Basics Adjustable Barbell Lifting Dumbbells — $89.90, 4.6 from 9,858 ratings. Under budget and converts between two dumbbells and a short barbell, which extends what you can train considerably for the money. Total load is the lowest here, so you will outgrow it.
4-in-1 Adjustable Dumbbell Set — $59.99, 4.7 from 1,454 ratings. Highest average on the page. Genuinely light starting weights, which is its purpose. It caps out early and that is fine — it is a first set, not a last one.
Yes4All Vinyl Coated Kettlebell Set — $97.08, 4.8 from 24,880 ratings. Not a dumbbell, included because at this budget it is the real alternative. If your training is swings, carries and conditioning rather than presses, buy this instead. We set out the trade in full in kettlebells vs dumbbells.
Who should spend more
If you are already pressing over 25kg per hand, this bracket will not hold you for long, and buying twice is more expensive than buying once. If you are not there yet, spending $600 on a selectorised set is money you could put into a bench, which will do more for your training than a faster weight change.
FAQ
Are spinlock collars safe? Yes, when tightened properly. Check them every few sets; they loosen.
Can I drop these? No. None of these are designed for it, and your floor is not either.
Do I need a bench? For pressing, eventually. Floor presses work in the meantime.
